1 Maccabees: Introduction to the Apocrypha, a new 7-week online study, begins Thursday, January 13. In this study we will read an account of the Maccabean revolt as found in the Apocrypha. In the mid-second century B.C.E. a group of Jews rose up in revolt against the Seleucid Empire, recaptured Jerusalem and rededicated the Second Temple, leading to the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. The study will also provide background discussion on the Apocrypha, the setting for the First Book of Maccabees, as well as the Second Temple Period during which it was written. To watch a brief introduction to the course, please click here.
It will not be necessary to have a Bible that includes the Apocrypha to participate in this study. The passages we will be reading will be included in the handouts on the website.
Videos and handouts will be posted to the website each week, and we’ll discuss each session’s material by ZOOM. Watch the website for the schedule.
